Engraving owes its superiority to the sharpness of its lines and intense colour. This technique was originally developed by artists like Durer in the 15th century, continued with Rembrandt and Van Dyck, Tiepoloi, Goya and Canaletto, and exploded with the twentieth century with artists like, Pablo Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Miro, and Kandinsky.
The beauty of engraving lies in the contrasting thick and thin lines, creating a three-dimensional quality. Look closely at an engraved invitation , and you will see while all the lettering is raised, some lines re raised more than others. Heavy lines are more pronounced, while thin lines are more delicate. No other process is capable of creating this multilevel effect.
