Dating back to the 16th century, engraving was the preserve of royalty and the well-to-do. This prestigious tradition of printing, raises your lettering above the surface while leaving slight indentations on the reverse side of the paper. The elegant look of engraving is produced by filling the crevices of an etched copperplate with ink, feeding the paper into the press and then stamping the paper between the copperplate and a hard surface – producing a piece which is highly visual and exceptionally tactile.
Engraving may take a little longer than other printing methods, but with good reason. Preparation of engraving plates still demands a certain amount of hand work from an engraving artist. Inks are hand-mixed and each stamped piece is inspected, by hand. Finally, there is no mass production in engraving; each job and each impression, is a customized one.
